Five apps have been banned for breaking local laws

Tinder, Grindr and three other dating apps have been banned in Pakistan for disseminating “immoral content”.

The government issued notices to Tinder, Grindr, Tagged, Skout and SayHi to remove the dating services.

Extra-marital relationships and homosexuality are illegal in Pakistan, the second largest Muslim-majority country in the world.

The country’s internet regulator said the companies had not responded to it within the stipulated time.

A Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) spokesman told BBC Urdu that as a consequence, the decision had been made to bring the management of these platforms into a “moral and legal realm”.

The watchdog has said, however, that it might reconsider the action if the apps agree to moderate what it views to be unethical and obscene material on their platforms.

Tinder, Grindr, Tagged and Skout did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters news

Minister says telecom regulator may have erred with wholesale rate decision

David Paddon, The Canadian Press

The federal government says it’s concerned that a controversial regulatory decision last year may undermine investments in Canada’s communications networks, particularly in rural and remote areas.

However, a statement issued Saturday morning by Navdeep Bains, on behalf of the federal cabinet, says it won’t intervene in the CRTC’s ongoing review of its own decision about wholesale internet rates.

“Our government is working hard to make sure that all Canadians have the access to high-speed Internet,” said Bains, who is minister for innovation, science and industry.

“We encourage all parties to cooperate in the CRTC’s ongoing review of the rates decision to support a timely conclusion that will provide more certainty for all involved parties.”

That CRTC decision, issued Aug. 15, 2019 but put on hold by an appeal court, has

As COVID looms over school year, Rep. Joe Kennedy hits Sen. Ed Markey on 1996 Telecommunications Act, broadband access; both press for stimulus deal to help parents, students

Rep. Joe Kennedy on Tuesday night took aim at one of Sen. Ed Markey’s signature bills, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, arguing too many families still cannot afford cable service or access broadband at a time of confusion and concerns for public health as teachers and parents grapple with COVID-19 heading into the school year.

In a WCVB debate, both candidates urgently pressed the federal government to assist cash-strapped states and towns with an injection of stimulus aid to help schools reopen safely and to assist with hybrid or remote learning where necessary.

Neither advocated a one-size-fits-all approach.

Markey said communities must “err on the side of caution” until “there’s a guarantee that these schools are safe.” He added that he’s pushing for $4 billion to expand internet access, broadband and Wi-Fi hotspots across the country and Massachusetts to prevent “homework and opportunity gaps” because “we have to anticipate those

CRTC announces $72M in broadband internet improvements for northern communities

Five northern community broadband projects in the N.W.T., Yukon and northern Manitoba will share in $72 million of Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Broadband Fund money.

According to a press release from the CRTC Wednesday, the projects are designed to improve broadband internet service for about 10,100 households in 51 communities.

The CRTC will dedicate $750 million to projects that improve broadband services in rural and remote communities over the next five years. Many communities in the North rely on slower satellite data connections for internet service.

“The pandemic makes [internet] even more important as children are trying to learn at home, as parents are working at home.” – Ian Scott, chairman of the CRTC

Ian Scott, the CRTC’s chairperson, told the CBC in an interview that the COVID-19 pandemic
“put a magnifying glass” on how important internet connectivity is for northern communities.
