What to look for in 2020, and what to avoid

derry wae

Whether you’re loyal to Windows, a Mac fan, or willing to try something new, you should know what to look for in your next laptop. Windows and Mac both have a wide selection of laptops for different needs, so you can find the model that’s the best for you. Chromebooks are worth considering too.

There’s more to a laptop than its operating system, so keep reading to find out which laptop is right for you.

The first big consideration to take when it comes to picking your new laptop is what operating system you want it to run. While traditionally that debate was dominated by Apple’s MacOS and Microsoft’s Windows, today, it’s also worth considering Google’s Chrome OS, which tends to come on much more affordable laptops.

While there are certainly comparable hardware and features offered with these platforms, there are some stark differences between them which are important to … Read More

Stranger answers call to get Chromebooks to Baltimore teacher’s students

A Baltimore teacher’s students are getting Chromebooks thanks to a man on a mission.

This is the third week of school and there are still children waiting for Chromebooks.

The start of the school year comes with challenges for first-year teacher Trivia Payne.

“I realized that they didn’t have computers, they were on phones. Or if they had a computer, the sound was all jumbled up,” Payne said.

Payne teaches second grade at Sinclair Lane Elementary, and half of her students didn’t have laptops as schools started the semester virtually.

“I remember, on my lunch break, I started texting people, ‘If you have any laptops, please let me know,'” Payne said.

That’s how she got connected with Gerald Moore.

“I immediately decided that I’m going to get your kids Chromebooks because this is unnecessary. They should have the opportunity to be successful,” Moore

Best remote learning MacBook for 2020: MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro

derry wae

Any other year and the back-to-school laptop shopping would be long since over. But in 2020, school reopenings are already causing chaos as cities and states reverse course and send students home for full-time remote learning. That means changing circumstances and new school tech needs for many students.

While many remote-learning school tasks can be accomplished with a simple Chromebook or cheap Windows laptop, those systems, especially budget-priced ones, can be hard to find right now. A bigger investment, but a good long-term one, is a full-featured MacBook. With its well-regarded MacOS and nearly bullet-proof build, it’s still the first choice for many students in high school and college — especially with some decent student discounts usually available from Apple, at least for college students and faculty.

County Board of Elections adjusts to new absentee ballot rules

LUMBERTON — The director of the Robeson County Board of Elections says her office is adjusting after the state board changed the procedures regarding absentee ballots in this fall’s election.

The new rules approved Tuesday by the State Board of Elections mandate that if there is a deficiency in the voter’s absentee ballot request or the ballot itself, the voter can be sent a cure certification instead of having to sign a cure document and fill out a new ballot.

“Instead of having to cancel out one ballot and reissue another one, we could just send the cure affidavit, so that part would make it easier for us,” Tina Bledsoe said.

The ballot deficiencies included in the change are the voter did not sign the voter certification or signed it in the wrong place, or the witness did not print his or her name or address, did

Pembroke Mayor Greg Cummings speaks Friday at an event to announce a BUILD Grant award in the amount of $5,262,618. The money will be used to pay for improvements in Pembroke’s downtown area.

PEMBROKE — “Persistence paid off” when it came to the town of Pembroke finding the money to pay for improvements and beautification of the downtown area.

That was the message for local, state and federal officials who gathered Friday in Pembroke Town Hall to publicly announce, and sing the praises of, the $5.2 million grant the town has been awarded to fund the creation of a new downtown. The money is part of the Trump administration’s $1 billion investment in American infrastructure through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, or BUILD, Transportation Discretionary Grants program.

“Five years, thank you for your perseverance in getting things done,” U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis told Pembroke officials. “Your hard work

Surveys underway to determine seat belt use in North Carolina

LUMBERTON — Surveys to determine the official rate of seat belt usage in North Carolina are currently underway in 15 counties, including Robeson.

The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program is partnering with researchers from N.C. State’s Institute for Transportation Research and Education, who will be conducting roadside surveys now through Oct. 3 at randomly selected sites. Robeson County is one of the 15 counties in the state with the most “unstable” seat belt usage rate that were included in the sample for the annual statewide seat belt use survey. Other counties in the top 15 are Mecklenburg, Pender, Sampson, Columbus, Alamance, Buncombe, Catawba, Cleveland, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Nash, Wake and Wilkes.

Results from the surveys are necessary to qualify for federal seat belt incentive grants. The federal money is used to fund initiatives that support the elimination of preventable roadway deaths across North Carolina.

Whether your high schooler is still doing full-on remote learning, is 100% back in a school building or doing a hybrid of the two, a good laptop is going to be important for getting through the school year. This list highlighting the best laptop for high school students is all about machines that provide reliable, everyday performance and long battery life but in sizes that can fit into an average backpack and at prices around or below $1,000.

With more people learning and working from home though, the increased need for inexpensive laptops means models frequently come in and out of stock at retailers. The greater demand also means third-party sellers are listing laptops for a little or a lot more than their regular price. For example, one of my favorite Chromebooks at the moment is the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, which is listed for $399

Baltimore-area schools start the year with online education. Thousands of students lack a way to engage.

derry wae

On the first day of a new school year in the midst of a pandemic, tens of thousands of students will likely be left behind, unable to show up Tuesday to greet their classmates and teachers on a computer screen.

Despite efforts by Baltimore-area school systems, students who lack internet access or a laptop won’t be signing on to the live online classes, their only opportunity for instruction until schools reopen. And they aren’t likely to get connected quickly.

The Maryland Department of Education has no reliable data on how many of its approximately 900,000 public school students lack access to a reliable internet connection or computers. Neither do many school system officials who say they’ve spent the summer attempting to reach disconnected households.

BERLIN, Ohio (AP) — For more than 30 years, Jerry Schlabach has owned and operated Berlin Bulk Foods, a quaint Amish mom-and-pop shop nestled in the heart of downtown Berlin.

His five sons all worked at the store. And each received a traditional Amish education, graduating after the eighth-grade. Despite this, Schlabach recognizes a need for increased technology and computer training in his community, a counterintuitive notion given the belief structures of the culture he was born into.

And though not turning a blind eye to his Amish heritage, Schlabach, along with a core group of supporters, knew a little change would go a long way.

“It’s important they
