US federal research and development spending as a share of GDP has fallen by nearly two thirds since the mid-1960s — a trend accompanied by decades of low productivity growth. In a recent extended episode of Political Economy, Jonathan Gruber, Tony Mills, Margaret O’Mara, Bret Swanson, and I discussed how policymakers should reverse this trend and reclaim America’s place at the forefront of the technological frontier.

Jonathan Gruber is the Ford Professor of Economics at MIT and the co-author of “Jump-Starting America: How Breakthrough Science Can Revive Economic Growth and the American Dream.” Tony Mills is the director of the R Street Institute’s science policy program, which aims to equip policymakers with scientific expertise and to advance public policies that stimulate scientific innovation. A New Low-Power GNSS Solution Creates More Precise Indoor Positioning

derry wae

Accuracy is a prevailing goal in global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). And while location-tracking on our mobile phones is significantly more precise than it was 10 years ago, we still see hiccups at the circuit-level when identifying one’s location indoors or in dense city environments.

Nestware is an IoT geolocation company that provides hybrid-signal technology to IoT modem and DSP vendors. Recently, the company announced that it is combining its soft-core GPS navigation IP with Synopsys’ IoT communications IP subsystem to provide a low-power GNSS solution that can be integrated into IoT modems—cutting the cost of a dedicated GNSS chip altogether.

Peekskill Schools Open With ‘Can Do’ Attitude

derry wae

PEEKSKILL, NY — Peekskill schools opened Thursday taking a ‘can do’ attitude toward the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

“While it might not have been the kick-off to the school year that we have had in previous years, today was certainly special in its own way,” said Superintendent Dr. David Mauricio. “Starting schools in a virtual model posed some challenges for us at first, but our team came together to create solutions.”

Mauricio said the hard work that teachers, staff and administrators did to prepare was evident as students logged into their virtual classrooms and were engaged in instruction.

“It was great to see the excitement on both ends – from teachers and students,” he said.

One of the most important innovations for the start of the school year was giving out Chromebooks to students who need laptops.

“As of this afternoon, we have handed out over 700 devices to

Lackawanna Trail fully reopens for first day of school | Education

derry wae

FACTORYVILLE — For the first time in six months, John Yanniello stood in front of a classroom full of children.

Unlike most area students, those at Lackawanna Trail will be in their classroom five days a week — spaced at least several feet apart and wearing masks.

On Thursday, Yanniello met the fourth graders in his math class. He also positioned a stand with his laptop so that other students, whose parents chose a virtual option, could see the math class, too.

Staying apart, Lackawanna Trail students came together for the first day of an unprecedented school year.

“I’m just happy they’re back,” Yanniello said as his students ate lunch in his classroom instead of the cafeteria due to social distancing efforts. “They seem happy to be back as well.”

While most school districts in Northeast Pennsylvania chose hybrid or fully virtual models for reopening, the Wyoming County district chose

derry wae

The days are steadily getting shorter and we’re heading into the colder seasons. For me, that conjures images of warm beverages and comfort food. So I’ve put together this list of awesome smart home products for the fall, ranging from the Oxo Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker to the Philips Hue Lily Outdoor Spot Light — and several other favorites.

Of course, all of these gadgets are great year-round, but they’re especially nice to have when it’s cold outside.

Brian Bennett/CNET

Coffee is great any time, but a warm beverage can come in particularly handy during those chilly fall mornings when it’s still dark outside and you need to get going.

The Oxo Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker is CNET’s favorite drip coffee maker. Not only is it affordable at $170, we were impressed by its hot, speedy brew that didn’t ruin the coffee grounds. Its 8-cup capacity means a full pot
