Laptops, desktops, printers and other gadgets make the modern world go round. These powerful machines don’t just make our lives easier. They’re also continually being reinvented and improved to match both the speed and ways in which we live our lives. However, what about those of us who want to change our behavior and purchase decisions to be more environmentally friendly? As much as we love our smartphones, we also know that these gadgets come with a big carbon footprint. The same goes for laptops, from production to shipping and the amount of energy they use on a daily basis.
To help out eco-conscious shoppers, HP has released the HP Sustainability Buyer’s Guide, which helps shoppers find desktops, laptops, monitors and printers made with sustainable materials and recycled plastics. On top of that, HP has released a line of laptops that function efficiently with ENERGY STAR ratings. No longer do you need to choose between high-performance and being friendly to the planet with these high-quality machines.
Since 2010, HP has reduced the amount of energy used by its laptop systems by 44%, its desktop computers by 47% and InkJet portfolio printers by 20%. Their desktops have undergone consistent design improvements with more efficient CPUs, efficient power supplies and an overall shift towards smaller desktops that require less energy to run.
They’ve also reduced the amount of materials needed to build their products, reducing both the carbon footprint of the devices as well as their weight. This makes them easier to carry for both you and the planet.

ENERGY STAR is a regulatory system that provides certifications to everything from whole office buildings to individual consumer products based on environmental efficiency. EPEAT, which stands for the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, assesses and identifies products that are both high-performance and environmentally-friendly. These HP products have all met the standards of these energy-conscious ratings systems.
The HP Planet Partners recycling program also makes it easier than ever to recycle old electronics. You can rest assured knowing those materials are going to be used and salvaged in order to reduce the demand for new materials for future machines. The program works to break down existing supplies and retire hardware products responsibly without a detrimental impact on the planet.
Here are a few of our favorite products from HP’s sustainable line of electronics, all of which are suitable for an adult working from home, a student looking at a year of virtual learning or any environmentalist in the market for a new appliance to add to their collection.
